The United States constitution and bill of rights are those sublime ineffable documents on which are supposed to stand as the supreme letter of the law in our nation. The fact is that more and more subversive elements have taken control of our federal government and have continuously threatened the very rights in which our forefathers have deemed inalienable and which our nation was founded upon. No right has been under the constant pressure of scrutiny and utter destruction quite like our second amendment in the bill of rights.
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”
Twenty-seven simple words that outline every Americans right to bear arms in our great nation, yet despite its simplicity it has been misinterpreted and maligned. Despite the fact that by all statistics from the FBI, guns actually SAVE more lives in America, than they take, people in power still wish to see us disarmed. The politicians let no tragedy go to waste, pushing gun control laws, bills and executive orders each and every time.
The bill of rights is under attack, which is why I have done extensive research and noticed something seldom talked about in the firearms community, the states which retain strong pro-gun stances have a second level of protection written into their state constitutions as well. States which have a right to keep and bear arms written into the very fabric of their constitutions, most often have more freedom in regards to our nations firearms laws.
States which have weakly worded or utterly absent gun rights mentioned in their constitutions, often have more strict gun control and more often than not, higher crime rates to match. State constitutions offer a second layer of protection, supporting the constitution and bill of rights, a second layer in defense of our liberties.
While gun rights groups sally forth to defend our national constitution and bill of rights, in all honesty and in my honest opinion, they should be fighting to have state constitutions altered to support it. States like California, Illinois, New York, New Jersey and countless others either lack or have weakly worded support for the second amendment in their state constitutions and also have some of the strictest firearms laws in the nation. I find this is no coincidence….
States such as my own (Pennsylvania) has strongly worded support for the second amendment and thus we have very good firearms laws;
“Pennsylvania state constitution – The right of the citizens to bear arms in defence of themselves and the State shall not be questioned. Art. 1, § 21 (enacted 1790, art. IX, § 21).
1776: That the people have a right to bear arms for the defence of themselves and the state; and as standing armies in the time of peace are dangerous to liberty, they ought not to be kept up; And that the military should be kept under strict subordination, to, and governed by, the civil power. Declaration of Rights, cl. XIII.”
It is important to note that states with two-stage protection of our constitutional rights, that violate both the US and their own state constitutions are rare and when they do so, law suits and criminal statutes often are taken and applied therein.
The fight to retain and regain our second amendment rights is ongoing and ever changing, month to month you can find various states and federal officials making power plays to restrict or diminish our rights in some capacity. In the past gun owners have made hundreds of concessions and honestly the time to say “No more gun control,” is well overdue. Adolf Hitler himself said;
“The best way to take control over a people and control them utterly is to take a little of their freedom at a time, to erode rights by a thousand tiny and almost imperceptible reductions. In this way, the people will not see those rights and freedoms being removed until past the point at which these changes cannot be reversed.”
…and that is exactly what gun control advocates have been doing for decades now. One small erosion of rights at a time, performed over and over and we have gone from a nation of proud gun owners, to a nation of maligned individuals who have to fight to retain the rights our forefathers and this great nation had promised to us and that our soldiers fought and died to protect.
We need to immediately take the fight to the anti-gunners, we need to support pro-firearms organizations, as many as possible, we need to support pro-gun legislature, we need to work towards building upon support for our constitutional rights, by building up our state constitutions to offer greater levels of protection against infringement. We need to do these things to protect our liberties NOW or else they will continue to be chipped away at until our constitution is null and void.
